Banquet Halls and the Grand Entrance
One of the biggest moments of a wedding after the vows are exchanged is the bride and groom's grand entrance into the banquet hall. The bride and groom may have already set the theme of the day through invitations, choice of attire, decoration and more. No matter how casual or formal the wedding may have been, the reception is an entirely different story.
If you want an elegant setting, where all eyes are on you, have the DJ slow down the music and let guests find their seats. The bride and groom can walk in hand in hand, or can walk in under the raising of military swords or through an archway of flowers.
When the bride and groom enter the banquet hall as Mr. and Mrs., it's a time for celebration. Some couples choose to do it with formal introductions: imagine a beautifully decorated banquet hall. Lights are sparkling and tables are adorned with candles and flowers. Chandeliers cast a soft glow and every one stops to look at the newly married couple and appreciate them. This is the time to shine. If you aren't having your first dance immediately, then stop in the middle of the space, or stop at the head of the table and give each other a kiss. Let people applaud. If you are going straight into your first dance as man and wife you may want a string quartet playing in the background. As the groom takes her hand, he spins the bride, dips her and their start their first dance as a married couple.
Other couples like to pick up the mood and let guests know it's time to party. They may do this by having the bridal party enter dancing or with sunglasses, or the bride and groom may choreograph a fun dance that involves a little teasing and flirtation. Michael Jackson's Thriller has even been used.
The entrance is one of the best ways to let a couple's personality come through. The first step is to choose the music. From Butterfly kisses to the Austin Power's theme song, Star Wars theme song, Bob Dylan's Make you Feel My Love or the Godfather theme song, the couple can create an atmosphere that reflects a personal moment of theirs which would be embodied by the couple's first dance, or it can be a rowdy atmosphere that lets guests know its time to get up and dance.
For a little fun, try rolling in on roller blades, or a bike. You can piggyback your groom or have him carry you in over his shoulder. Some couples like to cartwheel in or do flips as they start off their new life together.
Having the right DJ will ensure the focus is on the married couple and they play the right songs for the moment. Some couples write funny or embarrassing stories to be read as the bridal party is introduced, while others prefer a quick story as to how they all know each other. Be sure the bridal party knows what you expect of them, whether it's walking in arm in arm, or getting a little funky with a dance step.
In some traditions, it's the role of the guests to entertain the newlyweds with song and dance. Others believe the couple should entertain. Be sure to stay true to what you feel comfortable with and what reflects who you are as people and as a couple.
