Cake Pedestal

How could I make soft licorice lace candy turn rigid and stiff?
I'm making a cake for my daughter's 4th birthday, and I want to use licorice lace, namely Twizzlers Pull and Peel candy, to make little lace butterflies. I don't want to simply lay them on the cake, though. I want to put them on little candy pedestals so they look like they're flying. My problem is that the twizzlers are far to soft, and they just fall apart and unravel if they aren't laying flat. Could I make a simple syrup out of sugar and water and coat them and let it dry? I think that would look cute, because I could get it to dry in between the twizzlers frame to sort of look like the wings, and maybe even color them. Any suggestions?
Try using corn syrup/Karo syrup as glue rather than coating the whole twizzler and leave it out uncovered. They might get a bit too hard to eat but it'll still be edible.
