Do medical card holders in Ireland get different treatment from dentists compared to those who pay?

I was given metal fillings are there other types of fillings?When i was been given the fillings the dentist asked the nurse to ''pass the stuff he uses to give fillings to medical card holders'',this freaked me out, should i have been given something else?
Also what does polishing your teeth do?

Generally, medical card holder are given "silver" colour fillings rather than white one's except when it comes to the front teeth as they are cheaper. Generally if you wanted a white filling elsewhere in your mouth you have to pay for it (around 50 euro)
