How to Have a Wedding on a Shoestring Budget

Every bride deserves to feel like a princess on her wedding day.  Unfortunately unless you have a king’s ransom, some brides feel they have to settle for a less than perfect wedding.  There is a better way.  First, guys don’t generally get too excited about all the fancy details of a wedding.  Focus on the bride first.  The groom can wear a nice suit and you can buy matching ties for the groomsmen.  On the other hand, I have seen brides pay over $10,000 for a dress.  Wedding dresses used to be handed down from mother to daughter through the generations but today most brides want their own dress so shelling out an enormous amount for a dress that is going to be worn only once is not a smart use of limited funds.  However, there are lovely gowns out there that won’t break the bank.  The attached photo is of my daughter-in-law in her wedding gown.  Because of financial and family issues, this wedding had to be done on a VERY limited budget.  This dress was found in a shop that rents wedding gowns for $175.00.  We were even luckier because she is petite and this gown didn’t even have to be hemmed.  Further, it was on a sale rack so we were able to buy it for $150.00.  The veil cost another $25.00 so I was very pleased to get a cathedral train on a gorgeous gown that fit perfectly and a nice veil for $175.00.

Another hint, try to find people you know who enjoy doing hair and makeup so you don’t have to pay an expensive salon.  You can also go to a cosmetology school and have it done there at a reduced cost.  Of course, you want to have a practice day to be sure you get the style and look you want.  Be sure to use the same stylist for the practice and the actual wedding.

Flowers are another big cost item so consider silk flowers for the bouquets and boutonnières.  Craft stores have some already made up that are quite nice, or you can buy the supplies to make your own.  This makes a great activity for the bridesmaids to do for the bride.  Craft websites have step-by-step directions.  Silk bouquets last forever so the bride has a keepsake of her special day.  Flower arrangements for the church and reception can run a pretty penny.  Consider using lots of greenery, ribbon and candles instead.  Ribbon can be bought in the wedding colors.  Greenery can be rented at an inexpensive rate or borrow someone’s ferns for a day.  Candles give a romantic glow and aren’t as pricey as flowers.  For the reception tables, use mirrors with candles and greenery to make lovely centerpieces.

Soloists and musicians can be expensive unless you know someone who would like to offer their services as their wedding gift to the couple.  Today’s electronic technology makes recorded music sound very good.  Instead of a soloist have special guests read a romantic poem or favorite scripture aloud.  This adds a personal touch and gives the couple a chance to include some people in the ceremony who could not be part of the wedding party.

When it comes to the reception, you are indeed fortunate if you know someone who can make the wedding cake.  Wedding cakes can start at $250 and go up from there.  If you don’t have someone who could make it as a gift or at a reduced price, consider buying a small two-tiered cake and serving cake squares to the guests.  Cake squares are less expensive than adding another tier and they look nice and uniform on the plate.  Also, some reception sites will charge to have someone slice the cake (by the slice) and will not let you have a friend or family member do it.

Food can be elaborate or as simple as mints, cake, fruit, sandwiches and punch.  Keep in mind that 20 years from now, the couple nor the guests will be raving about the food but about how happy the couple looked and how much fun they had.  A great way to have close friends and family give a much appreciated gift is to have them offer to make food for the reception or do the centerpieces if they are crafty.  Punch is easily made and with some greenery around the punch bowl makes a nice center to a food table.  People who are on fixed or stressed budgets would love the opportunity to give their time and talents to the wedding couple with a nice card and save money on a gift that may never be used.

Finally as for wedding pictures, this is the one area that I will spend a little more on.  You can save if you have contacts with someone who takes really great pictures and will gift their service.  If you must cut corners on other things to have money for quality photos, do it.  Remember that when couple wants to reminisce about their wedding, they don’t pull out the dried flowers or the boxed wedding gown.  They look at the wedding album.  Also, photos are shared with family and friends.  Great photos can make any venue look like a champagne wedding.

So, don’t be afraid to try new ideas and don’t forget that at the end of the day what matters most is that the two are now one.
