The semifinals on Thursday for the Golden Cup tournament were very interesting; the team of the United States won against Honduras with a final score of 2-0 and Mexico beat up Costa Rica in penalty shots after the regulation time finished 1-1, and none of the teams were able to score during the extra time. The Mexico vs. Costa Rica’s semifinal was a breathless match and showed that both teams are very good, even though Costa Rica had much more chances to take the lead during the complete game. The first half was clearly leaded by Costa Rica, who started the attack from the first minute of the match. The first clear opportunity for the Costa Rican squad was at minute 12’ when Armando Alonso made a great move but the ball hit the right post. In the second half of the game, the opportunities came equally for Mexico and Costa Rica, with a little advantage for Mexico but with many weaknesses in some parts of the game. Mexico was given a penalty shot when Freddy Fernandez touched the ball with his hand, but they failed to score when Mexican Miguel Sabah kicked a very soft shot that was saved by Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas. Once again, Costa Rica had more opportunities to score than Mexico in overtime, but they failed to convert. Mexico had their chances as well, without any positive result. The resolution of the match came in the penalty shoots. Here Ledezma, who gave hope to the Costa Rican squad and fans scoring the equalizing goal of the game, failed to convert one penalty shot when goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa saved it, whereas Mexico scored its five attempts, giving the final victory for El Tri. Right now the main goal of the Mexican squad is to focus for the final game that is going to be held on Sunday against the United States. This game is going to be as tense as all of the games between the Mexican and the US squad. In addition, these two rivals are going to meet again on August 12th for the World Cup qualifier that is going to be held in the Azteca, where the US team has never won before. However, the Mexican squad is taking one game at a time. "We're not focusing on that right now, we're focusing on our next match," Guillermo Ochoa about the World Cup qualifier.
