Many brides will not give a thought to their wedding favors until a few weeks before the wedding. It is at this they realize that they haven’t factored them into their initial wedding budget and discover that what funds are available to them are totally insufficient to cover the cost!
Don’t allow yourself to end up in this situation!
It is vital that you add your favors into your wedding budget at the beginning of your wedding planning. Don’t fall into the trap of assuming that column at the bottom marked ‘extras’ will contain enough cash to cover them – by the time you get round to buying your favors, you will probably have spent this twice over on things ‘you simply had to have’!
So how do you arrive at a figure for your wedding favors? Initially you should assume that everyone on your guest list will be coming. Take off favors for yourselves, some will also exclude the other members of the wedding party that sit at the top table. But that is up to you.
Do some research. At this point you probably won’t know enough about your wedding to make a firm decision on which favors you will have, so you are really only looking to gauge an idea of price. Generally, wedding favors cost between $2 and $3 each for popular types.
Then you need to add in the cost of packaging – boxes, bags, tins etc; decorations such as ribbons, stickers, labels or tags and any additional wrappings. You also need to include the cost of shipping and applicable taxes.
Don’t be tempted to use prices based on bulk purchases, as you don’t have a firm figure for the number of favors required yet and your actual figure could fall short of that required to qualify for the bulk purchase price.
As a guide I would budget between $4 and $5 dollars per favor, which should give you plenty of money to work with. I say ‘per favor’ because you are more likely to get a realistic figure by working it out on a per piece basis than if you just allocated a lump sum, say $200 for instance, which for a wedding of 100 guests would be a tight budget of $2 per favor. Favors at this price are not impossible but you would need to be creative and willing to compromise.
When you total up the estimated cost of your favors it may look rather high, but remember that not all your guests will attend, on average about 20% will decline, but it is best to start with a figure that covers everyone and then reduce it as your RSVP’s start to come in.
Start your favor shopping early on and make a note of the best deals around, those stores that have the best selections and those that offer the best prices. Check out sites that offer free shipping and bulk purchase pricing. Once you have decided then you are totally ready to go ahead and place your order.
