What can you do with a tennessee walker?
I know it sounds stupid, at first. But are there like saddle seat type classes for tennessee walkers that don't have all the chains and cruelly overgrown hooves and stuff? Do you use a normal saddle seat saddle? What kind of bit and all that? Do you use a double bridle? Can it be hunt style? Can you use those ribbon browbands? Can you trail ride in a saddle seat saddle? Can tennessee walkers enter hunter jumper competitions, even though they are gaited? Thanks!!
Yes, there are flat shod classes.
As for the saddle, you have to get a special saddle, because the average saddle doesn't fit a TWH, because of their really high withers. A normal saddle will sit down on the withers, and cause pain. There are companies that make saddles specially to fit high withered horses, like Tucker, which I love. You can find them in any style.
For riding on the trail, I use a Tucker Trooper saddle, plenty of clearance for their withers, and the gel seat paired with a smooth running walk makes for a great ride.
The saddle for a walker also needs to sit a bit forward, and then you in the saddle need to sit back, and have a deep seat. It is because of this that I'm looking for a dressage saddle to ride.
Tennessee Walking Horses can do anything that another horse can do. Any breed can, some are just better than others.
As far as gaits, a Tennessee Walking horse doesn't trot (only poor walking horses trot, unless an idiot teaches them to) their running walk replaces that, and is just as fast as a trot, sometimes faster. As long as it does not require a trot, a walker can do it.
They can also rack, and I have a four year old who impersonates a Saddlebred on occasion.
