Ghost Tours At Dover Castle
Prepare to be spooked and discover the darker side of one of the most famous and historic castles in England on a ghost tour of Dover Castle in Kent. The castle is famed for being one of South East England's most haunted castles, so beware - this is a night to remember and is not for the faint-hearted out there.
Dover Castle is home to over nine resident spirits and here you can discover the story behind each of them through findings from past investigations and anecdotes as told by staff and past visitors.
The tour involves visits to many of the spookiest parts of the castle, including the wartime tunnel, the great Keep of King Henry II and the medieval underground. Hear tales of bizarre sightings and eerie sounds as you travel underground into the castle's maze of ghostly tunnels. Above ground, you will enter King Henry II's Great Tower and discover the paranormal secrets of this centuries old fortress.
Ghost sitings have mainly been in the tunnels but in the basement area of the keep, a moustached 17th centure cavalier with a long, dark, wavy hair under a black hat and long purple cloak was spotted. In the tunnels was a 17th century soldier carrying a pike and a man in a blue cloak. The lower half of a man was seen vanishing through a doorway from the King's bedchamber. The lady in red appears in the castle keep's stairway and the mural gallery. A headless figure, believed to be a little drummer boy has been spotted in the grounds. Ghosts from more recent history have been seen in the form of military servicemen from the WW2 section of the tunnels.
It isn't only the ghostly figures that make the castle so well known for being one of England's most haunted spots though, spooky noises have been heard in many locations. Banging doors can be heard in the tower section of the tunnels as well as screams and moans from the passageways.
From the battlements comes the sound of drumming which is believed to be related back to the death of the drummer boy named Sean Flynn. It is said that he used to walk through the darkness drumming and that one night robbers were tipped off that he would be walking to town with a large amount of money. When he was inevitably attacked by the robbers, instead of handing over the money, he attempted to fight them off and was beheaded in the process. This story came to the attention of the TV show 'Most Haunted' where the presenter/medium appeared to receive messages from the boy and advised him to go to the light and in turn to be with his mother. Apparently the drumming has not been heard since this incident.
Dover Castle is steeped in history as it was one of the most important defensive spots of the British coastline as it is built at the point of the shortest crossing of the English Channel. After being inhabited by influencial figures like William of Normandy and Henry II and being the home to many a bloody battle, it is not hard to imagine why this castle should be so haunted.
