The city of Nuremberg has been called everything from The Treasure Chest of the German Empire to the City of the Nazi Party Ralliesand in 1933, Nuremberg was christened The City of the Nazi Party Rallies. To Adolf Hitler, this was a town which had been connected to some of the most significant developments in German history.
Nuremberg was heavily destroyed and moreover, Nuremberg's status in the Third Reich meant that it was also the scene of the War Crimes Trials.
Shopping in the inner city is a very relaxed. A generously designed pedestrian precinct, established as early as in 1966 and the oldest of its kind in Germany and is also one of Europe's largest shopping precincts.
Germany's most famous Christmas Market opens its stalls for visitors, right in the middle of the city, on Nuremberg Main Market Square. At 5.30 p.m. on the Friday before the first Advent Sunday. About 180 wooden stalls, festooned with red-and-white cloth, have given the Christmas Market its name of Little Town from Wood and Cloth and 200 stall holders present their traditional wares.
The roasted sausages is Nuremberg's most famous food, but there has been an ongoing debate as to who first made this type of pork delicacy the Franconians or the Thuringians. You can actually catch the aroma of sausages being made on the grill whenever you walk through the Old Town
Kettensteg is Germany's oldest hanging bridge. The bridge in place today is still the original but receives extra support from wooden pillars and steel supports. It was first built in 1824, the Kettensteg was celebrated as a wonder of modern technology and Nuremberg's Johann Georg Kuppler enjoyed a brief spot of fame.
The Spielberg museum in Nuremberg has a toy-making tradition dating back centuries and the Toy Museum was only opened in 1971. Young and old nevertheless flock here to admire three thousand years' worth of toys, ranging from antique rag dolls and wooden puppets to Lego. Tin World, an incredible display of miniature cars and a model railways, is particularly impressive.
The Nazi Rally Grounds Museum is one of the best kept secrets of Nuremburg. It is a history of Hitler's acquisition of emergency powers and subsequent consolidation of power. It gives a perspective of the nationalism exuded there and the powerful propaganda used by the Nazi Party. The slave labour used to cut and move the large stones used to build the rally grounds and the Nuremberg Trials are also covered.
